The talented DJ and producer Jacob Colon has been taking the music world by storm with his unique blend of Latin elements and rugged beats that create a smooth yet hard-driven percussive groove. In this exclusive interview, we catch up with Jacob Colon to talk about his plans for 2024, upcoming collaborations, and new milestones he aims to achieve with his music.
Hi Jacob, pleasure to meet you! How’s it going?
Everything is great.
2024 is here and we’d love to know more about any upcoming projects you may
have in the works! Do you have any new releases coming up this year?
Yes, I’m actually setting up a couple projects now, to be ready for March for my label ‘Made to Move’ records. I’ll also be shopping around a couple labels with some original tracks that I’ve been working on, since the beginning of the new year. Be on the lookout.
Do you have any new upcoming collaborations or projects with other vocalists,
pianists, DJs, or producers?
Yes, earlier this year, I put together a Latin song with a singer from Venezuela. It’s got a bit of a Reggae touch to it. Something like a beachy ocean front view vibe, with an uplifting message. I’ll talk more about it as the release date gets closer. As of now, it’s a draft, so we’ve got a little back and forth to do before anything becomes final.
Got anything exciting in the works with new artist features and mixes from your
monthly radio show ‘Made to Move,’ that you are looking forward to?
Every week I’m excited to play some of my favorite tracks that I receive throughout the week. You’ll have to tune in to see for yourself. My show is re-broadcasted on Soundcloud and Mixcloud every week. I also have a couple guest mixes coming up that you guys can stream. With this type mix, I can be more creative than what you hear during my radio program. I always like to blend in any percussion rhythm, from an Afro House track to beef up the groove of any Tech House or Minimal House tracks I play.
With your interest in the Afrobeat Modern Dancehall movement, do you plan on experimenting and blending House or Tech-House with that genre this year or in the near future? If not, what types of musical influences are you looking to explore further?
Yes. The best thing about sampling programs for producers like Splice is the ability to sample any type of sound or melody in the current BPM of your track. This enables me set a up my drum groove, then skim though various sounds which are played out over my drum loops. This gives me endless creativity to branch out, and mix my sound with any genre.
We learned that you were gifted your first piano as a toddler. With your love for the piano, do you have a new piece of equipment such as a synthesizer or a particular keyboard you’d like to purchase and own this year?
Nothing as far as hardware. My last keyboard I bought was a MIDI board to trigger the software instruments I use, during my projects.
Do you have plans for connecting further with your fans via livestreaming your
music or sets? If so, what platforms were you thinking to experiment on? If not,
would you consider that as a possibility?
I’ve seen a couple DJs do that on Mixcloud, but I haven’t looked into it much for myself yet. I would definitely consider it for an upcoming guest mix.
Are there any special venues or festivals you’d love to perform at this year or in
the near future? What would be your dream venue?
I would love to play in Brazil at Green Valley.
What are some goals or projects aside from music that you’re planning to
accomplish?
I would like to get more familiar with Photoshop, and I also have some fitness goals that I’ve created for myself.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
I’ve added few different things to my vision board this year, so I’m excited to see them come to fruition.
