So, we’re thrilled to be sitting down with Ben Shawaer’s manager today to learn more about Ben’s beginnings, discovering how it all started for this enigmatic talent.
Hi! Thanks for joining us, can you tell us how Ben is doing?
He is fine! I haven’t seen him make music in a while. It looks like he’s working on something else but still related to his musical project.
We know from previous interviews that Ben has been producing music for a while now, but can you share with us what first ignited his passion? Do you know if there was a specific moment?
As said in these previous interviews, more than 20 years ago software like eJay and FruityLoops were released. The arrival of software like this was due to the emergence of operating systems like Windows. The introduction of new technologies to the market encouraged the arrival of new entrants in various fields, including music. The eJay software is a sequencer that integrates samples, as most of them do now, but the difference was that it was one of the first to do it at the time and the samples really had a recognizable touch. Ben Shawaer, having started listening to music that had used this type of tool, became interested, from a young age, in the distinct sound created by eJay software.
With such a unique style that blends elements from across genres, can you tell us how Ben came to develop such a distinct signature sound?
If we just talk about the music that has already been released, I don’t think they really reveal his signature yet. Finding a truly unique and recognizable sound can sometimes take time. In theory, to develop your own style you have to be interested in everything, in all styles of music and do a lot in different styles, try a lot of things. By doing this, the artist will little by little find things that he likes and build his own identity. This especially applies when we talk about the instrumental part. When an artist also sings himself, he can distinguish himself and find something unique more quickly because the voice is a simple element of distinction and in general, we all have more or less a unique voice.
Can you tell us about his early experiences as a Producer and the influences that have shaped his approach to production over the years?
We know very little about his past experiences. Even the answer to the previous question is something assumed but seems consistent with our various observations.
Were there any other genres outside of music that interested Ben early on and first introduced him to the wide spectrum of music on offer?
I think that in his tracks so far, and those still to come, we can feel the inspiration of House, Dance, Pop, Rock, Jazz and Classical music styles.
Do you know what the first Electronic music festival or event he ever attended was? How would you say that experience contributed to his drive and determination to start carving out his own path in the genre?
From what we know he has never attended a single Electronic Music event or he doesn’t remember it. We often hear stories from artists saying that they saw this or that artist live and that it inspired them to pursue a career in music, but this is not the case for Ben Shawaer, his determination seems to come from elsewhere.
How did Ben first get involved with producing music? Were there any mentors that played their part in developing his techniques or was it mostly through trial and error that Ben was able to establish a production process?
That’s a good question. When we met him, he didn’t know anyone in the music business. He seems to have had no mentor and has learned music on his own, through mistakes and trials.
When it comes to building a career as a Producer, how does Ben balance the creative process with the business side of the industry? What approach does he use to ensure that he is able to keep producing hard-hitting music whilst building a reputation on the scene?
Another good question. From what we see, he doesn’t pay much attention to the business side. He just makes music. If one day it pleases as many people as possible, then that’ll be great but if not, that’s ok. In any case, we think that it is always a question of feeling, of shared emotion when we talk about creation or live performance. We all have our own way of creating, of sharing our emotions and our work. I think there is a lot of luck when it comes to an artistic composition becoming widely successful.
What do you think Ben hopes to achieve next?
Well look, I think he’s going to release some more music, but we don’t know what he has in mind. You know, he’s an enigmatic character. Sometimes I have the impression that he doesn’t come from the same world as us.
Looking back on his journey so far, what advice do you think Ben would give to aspiring DJs and producers just starting to get into the world of music production?
There’s a lot to say for this question but I’ll sum it up like this: Just make music. Have fun.
Despite appearing as a talent shrouded in intrigue and secrecy, what we know of Ben Shawaer places him on a trajectory that will surely see more genre enthusiasts drawn to his work as he continues to add distinct and original music to his release catalogue. So, make sure to keep an eye on Ben Shawaer, as he will no doubt offer more captivating musical experiences as he drops more impactful music.
