Now, in this interview, Lady Decibel takes us behind the scenes of the remix, offering a deeper look at their creative process, sound design, and vision for the future.
Hi Lady Decibel, how are you doing?
Hey, we’re doing great, thank you for asking!
What initially drew you to remix “Lunch” by Billie Eilish? Was there a specific element of the original track that sparked your creativity?
When we first heard the hook, “I could eat that girl for lunch as she dances on my tongue, tastes like she might be the one,” we exchanged a look and said, “THIS NEEDS A LADY DECIBEL REMIX.” We knew we had to take this incredibly sexy hook and transform it into something intense and dance-worthy!
Your remix adds a bold dancefloor vibe. How did you approach balancing the essence of Billie’s original vocals with your own sonic signature?
The original edit of “Lunch” has a playful and sexy theme, but we knew we wanted to shift the vibe completely. Our goal was to highlight the strongest elements of the acapella while remixing it to infuse more intensity and passion. To make that happen, we incorporated epic Trance synths and melodic pads, adding a deep kick, sharp drums, and a rolling bassline to boost the energy. For Billie’s vocals, we kept the editing simple, using a chorus effect and reverb to give them an epic and sensual touch. We didn’t want to alter her voice too much as we wanted listeners to stay connected to the original feel. We also got creative with rising arpeggios to bring a euphoric moment into the track—definitely aiming for that “Trance hands reach for the lasers” moment! Overall, we wanted to honour Billie’s essence while giving the remix a more intense, dancefloor-ready energy.
Can you walk us through the sound design process for the bold synth work and pulsating leads in your remix? How did you want these elements to shape the track?
For this remix, we used synths from Baby Audio’s BA-1 digital synthesizer, which is one of our favourites for its nostalgic retro-analog sound. The BA-1 is modelled after the Yamaha CS-01, a classic monophonic synth from the 80s, and it delivers such a warm, analog feel. The presets were so good that we only made minimal tweaks with effects like delay and reverb. The synth work is straightforward with just two layers: a pad and a supporting melody that later turns into an arpeggio. Trance sounds naturally lend themselves to that big, epic feel, so the remix headed in that direction, and we’re really happy with how it came together.
The remix flows with a lot of energy, especially with those atmospheric chords and breakdowns. How did you decide where to build and release tension in the track?
Our creative process relies heavily on instinct. For us, music is about feeling rather than overthinking. If something feels good, we know we’re on the right path; if not, we adjust it to capture the right vibe. The song is centred around passionate moments, and we wanted to reflect that energy in the remix. The lyrics themselves called for an intense, sexual energy, and we let that guide the tension and release in the track.
When you were crafting the remix, did you have a particular dancefloor or club vibe in mind? How did this impact your arrangement choices?
We wanted to bring back old-school euphoric Trance vibes. Nostalgia is a big part of Lady Decibel’s new sound, and we felt it was the perfect moment to reintroduce those trance “hands-in-the-air” melodies. While Tech House is popular right now, we felt it was time to focus more on melody and euphoria rather than just rhythm, and that’s the energy we aimed to inject into this remix.
How important was it for you to stay true to the mood of the original while still making it your own? Were there any challenges in finding that balance?
The vibe definitely shifted from the original. While the original track had a playful, seductive energy, we wanted to give it a deeper, more intense seductive atmosphere. Surprisingly, we didn’t face too many challenges in achieving that balance, and we think we nailed our interpretation.
The production seems to have a lot of layers, from low-end beats to intricate percussive hits. What were some of your key production techniques in building the remix’s energy?
We definitely packed the remix with intentional percussive hits to maintain the energy. Epic synths need equally epic drums, right? One of our techniques involved matching Billie’s vocal dynamics with the synths, allowing the melodies and vocal lines to rise and fall together. The track’s peak is highlighted by a wild arpeggio section, which mirrors the rush of intensity in the lyrics. We also arranged the vocals to tell a sensual story, focusing on the most passionate parts of the acapella. Lots of reverb was added to create that high-energy, passionate feel throughout the remix.
As a relatively new duo, how has working together influenced the sound of this remix? Did your individual styles merge in any unexpected ways during production?
We’re always in sync when it comes to production. Dianne takes the lead, but we both share the same musical vision, checking in with each other to ensure the vibe feels right. Although we come from different musical backgrounds, we’ve found that our styles naturally merge to create something cohesive, and that shared wavelength is a big part of what defines Lady Decibel.
What do you hope fans of both Billie Eilish and Dance music take away from this remix? Do you see it as a bridge between genres and audiences?
We really wanted to amplify the sensual energy of the original and turn it into something more melodic and epic. We didn’t consciously think of this remix as a bridge between genres, but now that you mention it, it definitely feels like it brings different audiences together. Part of Lady Decibel’s mission is to create music that defies genre boundaries while maintaining a nostalgic element that connects listeners. This has been such a reflective and fun interview! Thank you for asking such thoughtful questions!
