Hi Kallaghan, pleasure to meet you! How’s it going?
I am great, I just came back from EDC Mexico and it’s one of the best festivals I ever had a chance to spin at.
We’ve finally arrived to 2024. We’d love to know more about any upcoming projects you may have in the works! Do you have any new releases and collaborations coming up this year?
I am preparing my new EP ‘Pyramid.’ My sound is shifting into a harder and darker direction. I am gonna be playing festivals this summer using my guitar and it’s gonna rock!
With your background being in a punk rock band for many years, do you plan on experimenting and infusing more rock elements? If not, what other types of musical influences are you looking to explore further?
I’ve been incorporating numerous Rock elements into my latest songs, featuring plenty of guitars and now real drums. My music is evolving towards a more Progressive style, with a multitude of elements that might not be perceived as simple by some, but I’m not concerned about that. I’m aiming for an epic feel, with grand build-ups, incorporating massive strings and monumental leads, making it increasingly orchestrated, I’d say.
Do you have any new techniques, equipment, or software you plan to integrate into your music production process?
I recently built two new studios in Miami and transported all my vintage gear from Europe, including a plethora of 70s and early 80s equipment such as microphones and 902s. I plan to sample my amps, and one thing I’m eager to do is to run my digitally produced tracks through my amps, Orange cab, and re-record them. My goal is to achieve a distinctly Rock-oriented sound.
We learned about your launch of Kallaghan Studios Miami in February of this year. How is that coming along and what is your vision behind it?
I’m building the studios to serve as a cultural hub—a space for me, my friends, and emerging talents to freely express ourselves. Additionally, it’ll function as a platform for developing my personal record label. It’s also a commercial space available for rent to all. My aim is to facilitate the creation of content and music on the fly, eliminating scheduling concerns. Ultimately, my main objective is to establish a welcoming space where everyone can gather and enjoy themselves.
Do you anticipate creating another track similar to ‘Conversations,’ and experimenting with sampling sounds from video games this year?
Absolutely! I had sampled a single sound from the movie ‘War of the Worlds’ for ‘Conversations.’ Movies often spark my creativity, and for my latest song ‘Pyramid,’ which holds significant importance in my live shows, I drew inspiration from the film ‘Immortal’ from 2004. This movie had previously influenced me to write Rock songs during my time with rock bands in Europe. Upon revisiting it, I found the movie still resonated with me. The ambiance of the film struck me as incredible, and it’s precisely this atmosphere that I sought to incorporate into my new track, ‘Pyramid.’
Are there new goals you want to achieve in maintaining your work-life balance? If so, how do you go about strategizing that?
I don’t view my life as just work; I see it as luck every single day. Making music brings me joy each morning, and this routine has persisted for 15 years. I’m immensely grateful for this privilege. Admittedly, balancing time with my family can be difficult, especially during travel, but I remain deeply appreciative because I know it’s not as straightforward for many others. Even during tough times, I strive to remember this perspective.
What new milestones would you like to achieve with your music in 2024?
This year, my goal is to authentically showcase the energy of KALLAGHAN to my audience and refine my style further. In my first two years as a DJ, I immersed myself in the scene and discovered the direction I wanted to pursue. As a Producer, I experimented with various songs that intrigued me, but I eventually realized my true passion lay in infusing my shows with the raw energy of Rock and Punk. Now, I’ve found peace in this realization and can seamlessly integrate it into my sets. This marks a significant milestone for me—not measured by numbers or commercial success, but by the pure satisfaction derived from the music played at my shows. I believe 2024 will be the year I fully embrace this journey.
Are there any goals or projects aside from music that you’re planning to accomplish?
Videos! I want to be able to direct my own videos and be more creative in that field.
