In this behind-the-scenes interview, Alphones shares insights into the inspiration and creative process behind the track, offering a glimpse into his artistic journey and what’s next on his horizon.
Hi Alphones, how are you?
I’m doing great, thank you! I’m really excited about the release of “Chinatown Rave” and can’t wait to see how people connect with it.
To begin, can you share the initial inspiration behind ‘Chinatown Rave’? What were your goals and ideas when you first set out to produce the track?
The initial idea came from my fascination with blending cultural influences into Electronic Music. I wanted to create something that felt both innovative and grounded in tradition. The inspiration behind ‘Chinatown Rave’ was to infuse Tech House with a strong oriental flavour, reflecting the energy and mystique of traditional Chinese music while maintaining the intensity of a club track.
The track features unique instrumentation—how did you decide which instruments and sounds to incorporate?
The pipa, a traditional Chinese string instrument, was central to the concept from the beginning. Its rich, textured sound brought the authenticity I was looking for. I also sampled philosophical phrases from Bruce Lee in Chinese to add depth and meaning, tying the track to themes of balance and discipline.
How would you say ‘Chinatown Rave’ reflects your growth as an artist?
It’s a testament to my willingness to experiment and push boundaries. Over the years, I’ve become more comfortable blending unexpected elements into my music. This track represents a step forward in my ability to craft something that’s both unique and dancefloor-ready.
How did you approach the layering of the track, especially in terms of breakdowns and drops? What was your process for structuring the track to ensure listeners remained engaged?
I focused on creating dynamic contrasts. The breakdowns are designed to highlight the melodic and atmospheric elements, like the pipa, while the drops bring back the raw energy of the bassline and percussion. Each section flows naturally into the next, keeping the listener engaged throughout.
The melodic riffs stand out in the track—can you share how you came up with these motifs and their role in the arrangement?
The melodic motifs were inspired by traditional Chinese scales, but I gave them a modern twist to fit the Tech House vibe. I wanted them to act as the emotional core of the track, something listeners could latch onto amidst the driving bassline and intricate percussion. These riffs help bridge the cultural influences with the contemporary dancefloor energy.
Was there a specific atmosphere or emotion you wanted to evoke with ‘Chinatown Rave’?
Absolutely. I wanted to evoke a sense of mystery and excitement, like stepping into a neon-lit alley in a bustling Chinatown. The track is meant to transport listeners to another world, where tradition meets modernity, and create a hypnotic, almost cinematic vibe that still feels grounded in the club experience.
Percussion is a strong feature throughout the track. Can you share how you balanced intricate percussion with the more melodic aspects in the arrangement of ‘Chinatown Rave’?
The key was finding the right rhythm to complement the melodies. I layered traditional percussion samples alongside Tech House drums to create a unique groove. The balance came from making sure neither element overwhelmed the other—allowing the percussion to drive the track while giving space for the melodies to shine during the breakdowns.
The bassline drives much of the energy—how did you design it to complement the other elements of the track?
The bassline was crafted to be both powerful and subtle, ensuring it anchored the track while leaving room for the melodic and percussive elements. I used a combination of analog synths and digital processing to get the right tone—deep, rolling, and slightly gritty—to keep the energy high and maintain cohesion throughout.
Looking back on the process, what was the most rewarding aspect of creating ‘Chinatown Rave’ for you?
The most rewarding part was hearing the final mix come together and realizing how seamlessly the cultural and electronic elements blended. It was also fulfilling to see how the track resonated during early playbacks with friends and colleagues. Their reactions reassured me that the risk of experimenting had paid off.
Now looking ahead, what’s next in your journey? Can fans expect any more releases soon?
Definitely! I’m always working on new material. I have a few exciting projects in the pipeline, including another track that delves into combining global sounds with Tech House. Fans can also expect more live gigs and perhaps a few surprises in terms of collaborations. 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year!
